Get your bearings
This guide covers Unguja, the main island most visitors mean by Zanzibar. Nungwi and Kendwa are in the northwest; the east-coast bases run south from Matemwe to Jambiani. Stone Town is on the west coast, near the main airport and the Malindi passenger port.
Start with the kind of day you want. The northwest suits a beach-first trip with less disruption from receding water at suitable stretches. The east coast rewards travellers who want a particular village, kite school or hotel and are happy to plan sea time around the tide.
OpenFreeMap is unavailable. You can explicitly load an OpenStreetMap fallback.

9
Stone TownA cultural base in its own right, with room access to plan.Tides and your beach routine
Kendwa and suitable western stretches of Nungwi generally make sea access easier across the tidal cycle. On much of the east coast, low water exposes broad flats, while higher water brings the sea closer. The exact beachfront matters more than a “Nungwi” or “Matemwe” address.

The exposed shoreline and tide times vary by beach and day.
The same imagined shore at higher and lower water. This illustration explains the change in shoreline; it does not show a particular beach or swimming depth.
Ask the hotel about conditions directly outside the property and consult local tide times during your stay. Waves, currents and access still vary. For an east-coast holiday, a pool or a satisfying plan for time away from the water can matter as much as the view.
1. Nungwi: beach evenings and a busy village
Nungwi works well when you want a choice of restaurants and activity beyond your hotel. Its accommodation wraps around a headland: the western beach, the northern waterfront and the northeast side should be compared separately. Choose the actual shore and walking connections, especially if sea access drives your decision.
Ocean-view roomTuraco Nungwi
Northern-shore resort with restaurants, a pool and several room-view categories.View on BookingThe current full name is Turaco Nungwi Resort, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel. The pictured Ocean Front room is a specific category; Garden and partial-ocean rooms offer different outlooks.
Beach walks to restaurants can change with water level. Ask the hotel for a usable route back after dinner.

Makofi Guest House — Fan-cooled shared-bathroom rooms; the Comfort Hut has a private bathroom and air conditioning.
2. Kendwa: resort days on a west-facing beach
Kendwa is a strong choice when the beach and hotel will fill most of the day. Its northwest-facing shore is known for easier water access through more of the tidal cycle and for sunsets over the sea. Choose it for that combination, then compare the facilities your travelling party will actually use.
Deluxe Garden roomGold Zanzibar
Deluxe Garden rooms offer a sofa bed; connecting rooms need confirmation.View on BookingMatch children’s ages to the permitted occupancy. The Deluxe Garden photograph shows an internal step, so ask for the precise layout if level access matters. Sea-view accommodation is a separate category.
Kendwa also has a party scene. Gold’s Booking listing warns about noise from Kendwa Rocks’ monthly Full Moon Party. Check the dates if an early bedtime matters, and discuss room position with the hotel when choosing accommodation for children or a restful break.

Zuri Zanzibar — Garden bungalows with generous terraces; choose oceanfront categories separately.
3. Matemwe: choose the shoreline as carefully as the dive centre
Matemwe covers more than one holiday setting. The village beach has small hotels and everyday fishing activity; farther north, lodges can occupy rocky or raised shoreline, with longer journeys to other places to eat. Mnemba excursions are a reason to stay in this part of the island, but launch arrangements differ.
Ocean Front SuiteSunshine Marine Lodge
Clifftop dive base with pools; beach visits use the sister-hotel shuttle.View on BookingSunshine Marine Lodge stands on a cliff by Muyuni, with no ordinary sandy beach in front. Beach visits use a shuttle to sister hotels. Sunshine Bay is adults-only, so families need a suitable destination; the shuttle timetable also shapes the day.
For a Mnemba trip, ask where you board, what the excursion includes and whether conservation charges are covered. Boat timings depend on the launch point and conditions. Trips to the surrounding marine sites should be distinguished from access to the privately operated island itself.
See stays in Matemwe4. Kiwengwa and Pwani Mchangani: choose the resort, then its address
These northeast-coast bases suit travellers who want pools, organised activities and meals close to their room. Kiwengwa and Pwani Mchangani are separate settlements; a hotel in Pwani Mchangani is not a walkable Kiwengwa-village address.
Deluxe roomLUX* Marijani
Interconnecting family options and a shared pool on Pwani Mchangani’s beachfront.View on BookingThe photographed Deluxe room is different from Beachfront Deluxe accommodation. Room position and meal-plan inclusions can change the daily experience within the same resort.
Half board may suit evenings spent at the resort. If dinners out require a car, include the return journey when comparing nearby menus with the hotel’s meal plan.
See stays in Pwani Mchangani5. Pongwe and Uroa: a cove stay or a village shore
Pongwe’s appeal is a smaller-scale holiday around a cove and its hotel. Uroa, farther south, is a separate fishing village with a more open stretch of coast. Treat them as neighbouring choices, not one continuous beach: their shoreline shape, local activity and evening options differ by address.
Beachfront terracePongwe Beach Hotel
A small cove hotel with thatched terraces and an oceanfront pool.View on BookingAt Pongwe Beach Hotel, compare dinner arrangements before choosing a meal plan, and ask about transport for evenings elsewhere. The pictured Beachfront Room has a private veranda; Garden rooms are a separate category. The hotel’s pool adds flexibility when sea conditions change.
If staying in Uroa instead, decide how close you want to be to the working village and ask about bathing access outside the property. The larger area name is useful for orientation, but a photograph of a Pongwe cove tells you little about a room booked farther south.

6. Paje: kitesurfing and independent beach days
Paje suits a holiday that moves between a kite school, cafés, the beach and small places to eat. It is a useful base even when only one person in the group kitesurfs. Choose your school and accommodation together so that equipment storage, lessons and the daily trip to the water work conveniently.
Premium Pool terraceDhow Inn
Garden terraces and pools, with kite storage and beach assistance available.View on BookingDhow Inn is in north-central Paje. The photographed Premium Pool category has a private plunge pool; other room categories differ. Confirm the room-to-beach route if carrying equipment. Ask the school about lesson and launch locations and its timetable.

7. Jambiani: smaller hotels along a long village
Jambiani is a good match for travellers who want a small hotel and a daily connection with the village. The settlement stretches along the shore, so two “Jambiani” addresses can offer different walks to cafés, restaurants or a kite school. Pick the part you want to spend time in, then choose the room.
Beach Standard RoomThe Loop
A village beachfront stay with a shared pool and watersports.View on BookingThe Loop’s Booking listing currently excludes children. Confirm admission directly before considering it for a stay with teenagers. The pictured Beach Standard Room and the farther-back Garden Rooms occupy different positions.
A village lunch can fit around changing tides.
Blue Oyster — Family-run beachfront rooms with fans, no air conditioning, and a pool.
8. Michamvi and Bwejuu: three coastlines to distinguish
Pingwe faces the open ocean and is the setting for The Rock restaurant. Michamvi Kae faces west across Chwaka Bay, making it the relevant side for bay sunsets. Bwejuu lies farther south on the east-facing coast, with smaller stays and resort properties spread along the shore.
Kusum rooftop terraceUpendo Beach
Pingwe villas near The Rock, with distinct private-villa and suite options.View on BookingAt Upendo Beach, Kusum and Priya are adult-only villas with private rooftop pools, while Villa Shiva has a different family-oriented configuration and individually bookable suites. A suite reservation should not be mistaken for exclusive use of an entire villa.
Upendo also has a social restaurant, bar and pool; choose the room’s position accordingly if quiet is a priority. Plan an evening return from Paje with your driver.
Baladin Zanzibar — Small Pingwe beach hotel. The Bungalow with Seaview has a double bed upstairs and two singles below, while the Suite with Seaview keeps the beds on one level. Baladin publishes an annual closure throughout May.
9. Stone Town: a base for the island’s cultural life
Stone Town deserves time of its own. Stay here for the old trading-town streets, carved doorways, markets and waterfront, with meals and historic sights woven into the day. For a short culture-led trip, it can be the main base; for a beach holiday, one or two nights can provide a satisfying change of pace.
Pavillion roomEmerson on Hurumzi
Individually designed rooms and rooftop dining in the historic town’s lanes.View on BookingAt Emerson on Hurumzi, choose by the named room’s layout and floor: stairs are part of staying here. Room layouts, cooling and private terraces vary, while rooftop dining is a shared experience. Reserve dinner separately if it is part of your plan.
Ask the hotel where a driver can stop and how luggage reaches reception and the room. An old-town stay can involve a final walk through the lanes, followed by stairs. If your flight is early, agree the pickup point the day before; proximity to the airport alone does not settle the departure plan.

Arriving at your base
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) is on Unguja, south of Zanzibar City. Stone Town is the city-based option; the northern and eastern beaches require a longer road transfer. Have the hotel quote for its exact address, vehicle, passenger count and arrival time, including any waiting or late-arrival charge.
For a sense of scale, Turaco quotes roughly 1–1.5 hours’ drive from ZNZ, while Sunshine Group allows around 1.5 hours to its Matemwe properties. These are operator estimates for the road journey. Airport formalities, baggage, waiting and the final journey to the room come on top.
For an arrival late in the day, confirm reception arrangements and whether a meal will still be available. In a large resort, let the hotel know about mobility needs before arrival so the room position and any internal transport can be arranged together.
For a ferry journey, use the terminal named on your ticket and agree the pickup point with the hotel. Malindi is an important passenger port beside Stone Town, while other terminal operations also exist. Azam requires passengers to report at least one hour before departure; that is additional to the crossing and onward road journey. Carry your passport.
A pre-arranged transfer and selected excursions are enough for many beach stays. If you plan frequent independent outings, compare the location’s transport costs before choosing a remote hotel. An excursion-day hotel change can work, but only when the operator has agreed the luggage, route and extra stop.
Choose the season as well as the coast
Zanzibar’s usual rainfall pattern includes longer rains from March to May and shorter rains around October to December. January and February are relatively drier, as is June to September. These are climate patterns, so allow flexibility for the weather during your own trip.
The southeast’s kite seasons broadly follow the kusi winds around June to October and kaskazi around December to February or March. In a windy month, Paje can be exactly right for lessons while a traveller focused on lounging may prefer a more sheltered hotel position. Coast orientation helps the choice; it cannot settle daily sea conditions.
If travelling during the wetter months, give more weight to the room, sheltered shared spaces and meal arrangements. Check whether the hotel and the particular activities you want will be operating. Seaweed also varies with conditions, so no coast should be sold as guaranteed clear throughout the year.
Costs and entry details worth checking
Hotel infrastructure tax is charged by the property’s official category: USD 2 per person per day for one-star and other hotels, USD 4 per person per day for two- and three-star hotels, and USD 5 per person per day for four- and five-star hotels. Small-island hotels and underwater rooms have a USD 10 per person per day rate. Ask which category applies and whether your quoted total already includes the charge.
Mandatory inbound insurance now depends on your first point of entry. Under the October 2026 clarification, travellers subject to the requirement obtain ZIC cover when entering Zanzibar first, or NIC cover when entering mainland Tanzania first. A valid applicable policy covers the same insured journey across both; a safari followed by Zanzibar does not automatically require two purchases.
ZIC lists USD 44 per adult, with reduced child and EAC/SADC categories. Check eligibility on the official portal and keep the certificate and QR code available. The cover includes emergency medical benefits, subject to its terms; review the limits and your intended activities when deciding on any additional insurance.
Visa eligibility and fees depend on your passport and category; use the official Tanzania visa guidance before committing to travel. Check current health-entry requirements for the whole itinerary, including transit stops, and seek individual prevention advice from a travel clinic. The room choice should separately confirm essentials such as air conditioning, fans and any mosquito-screen arrangements.
Plan one base or two
For a short beach break, one well-chosen coastal base avoids using a large part of the trip for packing and transfers. Add Stone Town when you want time for its streets and food, or when its location works with your arrival and departure. A cultural stay here should feel like part of the trip, rather than an enforced waiting night.
With a week or more, a split can be worthwhile if the two stops offer different days: for example, Kendwa for resort beach time followed by Paje for kitesurfing, or Jambiani followed by Stone Town. Choose the contrast you will use; changing hotels only to visit another similar beach often adds more logistics than pleasure.
