Where to Stay in Naples: Find Your Side of the City

For a first visit, choose Centro Storico if your days revolve around the historic sights; choose Chiaia if you would rather return to broader streets and the seafront.

Key places

1. Centro Storico and Decumani

Stay here for Spaccanapoli, San Gregorio Armeno and old-town meals on foot. It suits a short visit built around churches, small food stops and the freedom to return to your room between sights. For a light sleeper or a step-free stay, the bedroom outlook and route through these historic buildings still matter.

Piazza Bellini’s apartments may have split levels or stairs: establish the booked unit’s access and included services. In any historic building, a lift may start above street level or stop short of the room’s floor.

Costantinopoli 104 occupies an eighteenth-century neoclassical villa with contemporary art. Its garden pool is seasonal.

For onward travel, choose Dante, Museo/Cavour, Università or Duomo according to the address.

2. Toledo and Municipio

Choose this base for sightseeing with metro and port connections. The Toledo end puts shopping, the Spanish Quarter and Augusteo’s Centrale funicular close by; Municipio and Via Medina favour Beverello. Main-road traffic is the trade-off. For an island departure, choose the hotel against the terminal on your ticket.

At Renaissance, breakfast inclusion and a bedroom sea view are separate rate choices. At Turchini, ask which rooms face Via Medina if traffic noise matters.

Beverello serves fast passenger boats; Calata Porta di Massa serves conventional ferries. Use your operator’s terminal, berth and boarding deadline. The Alibus reaches named port stops, with a final walk to the hotel; it does not stop at a place simply called Municipio.

This port search includes Via Medina; it does not cover all of Toledo.

3. Quartieri Spagnoli

Choose the lanes behind Via Toledo for small stays, food shops and street art close to the main shopping street. A lower address simplifies arrival with bags. Streets climb towards Corso Vittorio Emanuele, so a hillside hotel needs a deliberate route home rather than the same plan as a Toledo-side room.

4. Chiaia and the seafront

Choose this side when dinner, shopping and a waterfront walk are as important as the old-town sights. Stay around Piazza dei Martiri for inner Chiaia’s restaurants and shops, or on Via Partenope and Santa Lucia for a grand hotel beside the sea. Hotels on Corso Vittorio Emanuele offer an elevated setting with an uphill approach. The choice is a city-neighbourhood evening versus a waterfront stay.

Line 6 serves the Chiaia corridor; Line 2 at Piazza Amedeo can suit inner Chiaia. Match the stop and final walk to the hotel.

Castel dell’Ovo remains closed to visits until further notice ; the exterior is still a waterfront landmark.

This search focuses on Chiaia; Santa Lucia and Via Partenope are a separate waterfront area.

5. Vomero

Vomero suits a stay with neighbourhood dinners around Vanvitelli, shopping and walks towards Castel Sant’Elmo, followed by trips down to the old town. Cimarosa fits that routine. Vomero High is farther towards the hospital district and serves a different location need. If most evenings will be spent below the hill, include the last service and a taxi alternative in the decision.

The Centrale funicular runs between Augusteo and Fuga; Chiaia runs between Parco Margherita and Cimarosa. Montesanto closed for overhaul from 15 May 2026 . Use the current service notice for the evening you travel.

6. Mergellina and Posillipo

Mergellina suits a slower waterfront routine with dining by the harbour and rail connections into the centre. A Posillipo hotel makes more sense when its bay view or setting is a reason for the trip itself. Ausonia keeps you by the harbour; Paradiso exchanges that convenience for a shared terrace above it and an uphill connection.

Paradiso is at Via Catullo 11. Its official directions use the Mergellina funicular to San Gioacchino, followed by the remaining walk. Comfort, partial-view and full-sea-view categories differ; arrange a taxi for a late return when needed.

Ausonia is a B&B at Via Francesco Caracciolo 11; not every bedroom faces the sea. Obtain written confirmation for arrival after 21:00 because its published reception information conflicts.

Line 2 connects Mergellina with central Naples; Line 6 offers a route towards Municipio. Neither reaches every Posillipo address, so plan the final connection to your hotel.

The costs to settle before booking

Tourist tax: budget it separately

These municipal rates, effective 1 May 2026 , apply per person, per night. The property’s registered category determines the charge.

Accommodation categoryTourist tax
Five-star and four-star hotels€6.00 per person/night
Three-star hotels€5.50 per person/night
Two-star hotels€4.50 per person/night
One-star hotels€4.00 per person/night
Extra-hotel accommodation, including B&Bs and guest houses€5.50 per person/night
Short-term rentals€6.00 per person/night

The charge has a 14-consecutive-night cap; exemptions include children under 14 and Naples residents. Check whether the booking total includes the tax and which documents the property requires for an exemption.

For two non-exempt adults staying three nights, allow €33 in a three-star hotel or B&B, or €36 in a four- or five-star hotel or short-term rental: a €3 difference across the stay.

Example: 3 nights for two adults

This example covers three nights and three sightseeing days, using a three-star hotel or B&B, standard adult admission, ANM-only day tickets and ordinary EAV trains to Pompeii. Accommodation is excluded.

Item and calculationTotal for two
Tourist tax: 2 adults × 3 nights × €5.50€33.00
Airport Alibus: 2 adults × 2 journeys × €5.00€20.00
ANM urban day tickets: 2 adults × 3 days × €4.50€27.00
Cappella Sansevero: 2 standard tickets × €12.00€24.00
MANN: 2 standard tickets × €20.00€40.00
Pompeii EAV trains: 2 adults × 2 journeys × €3.30€13.20
Pompei Express admission: 2 tickets × €20.00€40.00
Food allowance: €40 for pizza meals + €95 for two shared dinner outings€135.00
Illustrative total, excluding accommodation€332.20

That is about €110.73 per sightseeing day for the couple, or €55.37 each. Food is a chosen allowance, rather than checked menu prices or a complete meal plan. Add breakfasts, extra lunches and drinks, ferries, taxis and booking fees as needed. Walking may reduce the ticket cost; the ANM-only passes used here exclude Line 2.

Arriving and getting around

A night near Centrale or a sightseeing base?

A hotel beside Napoli Centrale / Piazza Garibaldi is worth considering for one night before an early train, or when several days begin with rail journeys. The main-line station, Garibaldi metro and EAV platforms form a transport interchange, so choose against the entrance and service you will use. For a stay centred on old-town walks and dinners, start with Centro Storico; for island departures, compare Municipio instead. A station-side night serves the train plan rather than replacing those neighbourhood stays. Station information .

Airport to hotel

November 2026 airport works: Naples Airport has announced a closure for runway works . Confirm affected dates and your operating airport with the airline.

The Alibus costs €5 per person, one way . The integrated UNICO ALIBUS ticket adds 90 minutes’ urban validity from first validation; check that it covers your onward operator. Ordinary city passes and Artecard do not cover the Alibus.

City-bound stops are Garibaldi, Immacolatella/Porta di Massa and Molo Angioino/Beverello at the Stazione Marittima. Allow roughly 15 minutes to Garibaldi or 35 minutes to the port, plus waiting, traffic and the final connection. Published airport departures span approximately 05:30–00:00; check your travel date.

Your baseA practical route to compare
Centro StoricoAlibus to Garibaldi, then the metro stop nearest the actual address
Toledo and MunicipioAlibus to the appropriate port stop, then walk or take a taxi with heavy luggage
Quartieri SpagnoliPort-side arrival, then approach from Via Toledo; check the uphill final section
Chiaia and the seafrontPort-side arrival, then walk, taxi or Line 6 where its stop and hours suit the hotel
VomeroAlibus to Garibaldi, then Line 1 for a Vanvitelli-area address; farther-out hotels need their own route
Mergellina and PosillipoGaribaldi and Line 2 for Mergellina; add the confirmed uphill connection for Posillipo

Line 1 does not yet provide an airport connection. For a taxi, request the applicable official fixed fare before departure and confirm that your destination falls within it.

City tickets: choose the operator

ANM-only tickets cost €1.30 single or €4.50 for a day, within that operator’s urban network. Trenitalia’s Line 2 is excluded.

Integrated fares changed on 1 October 2026. For a journey combining operators, use the current UnicoCampania purchase information and check the ticket’s coverage.

Hills, evening returns and access

Montesanto is closed for overhaul. For the other hill connections, work through the route, evening service and final approach separately.

  1. Check the hill connection The Centrale, Chiaia and Mergellina funiculars have different terminals; match one to your hotel.
  2. Plan the ride home Check your funicular or Line 6’s last departure for that day; keep a taxi option after dinner.
  3. Check the final approach Check street gradients, station lifts and steps before the hotel lift or room.

For limited mobility or a pushchair, ANM does not describe the Mergellina funicular as fully accessible . A street-level taxi arrival may be simpler.

If driving, obtain the hotel’s permitted approach, parking arrangements and ZTL instructions before relying on your navigation app.

Pompeii without the transport surprises

Route: take the Naples–Sorrento line from Napoli Porta Nolana or the EAV platforms at Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. Trenitalia’s Pompei station serves the modern town instead. Check the timetable for your particular departure.

Train fare: ordinary EAV trains cost €3.30 per adult each way, or €6.60 return. These company-only fares did not increase on 1 October 2026. Buy at authorised ticket offices or through GoEav, following the ticket’s validation instructions. For a smaller-site alternative, Ercolano Scavi is €2.60 each way; this is the train fare, separate from Herculaneum admission.

Important distinction: Pompei Express is a park admission ticket; Campania Express is a train, suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice . EAV has also announced an ordinary-service timetable change for 17 October 2026 .

Pompeii admission, identification and opening hours

Admission: choose the park ticket for your intended visit.

TicketStandard adult priceWhat it is for
Pompei Express€20The ancient city, excluding the suburban villas
Pompei+€25The city plus the additional villas/Boscoreale circuit specified by the park
Grande Pompei€30A three-day, multi-site ticket, with one admission per included site—not unlimited re-entry

Tickets are named: bring identification. The park admits up to 20,000 visitors per day. Use Vivaticket, the official online channel linked by the park, or official on-site ticket offices. Reserve your entry date first when time is limited.

From 15 October to 15 March, park hours are 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 15:30; the longer-season timetable applies through 14 October. Check individual building openings and the accessibility route before travel.

Museum days and the season

Plan around these usual weekly closures, allowing for announced exceptions:

Museum or attractionUsual closure
Cappella Sansevero — Veiled ChristTuesday
MANNTuesday
Certosa di San MartinoTuesday
CapodimonteWednesday
Castel Sant’ElmoThe castle can be a Tuesday option; the Museo del Novecento has different hours
Sansevero and MANN tickets

The Veiled Christ costs €12, or €8 for ages 18–26 inclusive. Book an official timed slot : tickets normally open 60 days ahead, with additional releases closer to the visit. MANN standard adult admission is €20.

In summer, prioritise effective air conditioning and a manageable journey home. For Christmas-season weekends near San Gregorio Armeno, an inward-facing room is useful when the streets stay busy.

For the 2027 America’s Cup in Naples, the organiser schedules the Match to start on 10 July 2027 . Compare cancellation terms and the location of waterfront event arrangements for those dates.

The choice in one sentence

Start with Piazza Bellini for the old town, Alabardieri for inner Chiaia, or Renaissance Mediterraneo when the port shapes the trip; choose a hill hotel only after checking the address and evening return.

FAQ

Which area is best for a first visit to Naples?
Start with Centro Storico when your days revolve around the historic sights. Choose Chiaia for broader streets and waterfront walks, or Municipio when island departures shape the trip.
Should I stay in Centro Storico or Chiaia?
Centro Storico puts old-town sights and lively lanes close together. Inner Chiaia suits dining and shopping; Santa Lucia and Via Partenope are a separate seafront setting. Choose the actual address and bedroom outlook, rather than the district name alone.
Where should I look with a smaller accommodation budget?
Compare compact rooms in Centro Storico and the lower streets off Toledo for your dates, including Il Convento’s smaller Standard category. Include tourist tax and room size; neither district is universally cheaper.
Where should I stay for quieter nights or a trip with children?
Inner Chiaia can suit broader-street walks; an inward-facing historic-centre room can suit sightseeing. Neither district guarantees quiet. For children or a pushchair, confirm the room layout and the complete route from drop-off, including steps and the hotel lift.
Where should I stay for day trips to the islands?
Municipio and the port-side streets simplify the connection. Beverello serves fast passenger boats; Calata Porta di Massa serves conventional ferries. Choose against the terminal on your operator’s ticket and allow for the final walk and boarding deadline.
Does an ANM city ticket include Line 2?
No: Line 2 is operated by Trenitalia. Choose a ticket covering your operator; the ANM-only day ticket used in our example costs €4.50.
Do city passes cover the airport Alibus?
Ordinary city passes and Artecard do not cover the Alibus. The €5 UNICO ALIBUS product includes one airport journey and 90 minutes’ urban validity from first validation.
Is Pompei Express a train?
Pompei Express is the €20 archaeological-park admission ticket. Campania Express is a separate rail service, currently suspended; ordinary EAV trains serve Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri.
How much extra should I allow beyond the room?
Two adults in a three-star hotel or B&B pay €11 tourist tax per night. The optional three-night example totals €332.20 excluding accommodation, with a chosen food allowance.
Should I stay near Napoli Centrale?
Consider a station-side hotel for one night before an early train or when several days begin with rail journeys. For old-town walks and dinners, start with Centro Storico; for island departures, compare Municipio. Choose the hotel against the entrance for the main-line train, metro or EAV service you will use.
