Where to stay in Istanbul for sights, evenings and the Bosphorus
For a first visit built around Hagia Sophia and Topkapı, stay in Sultanahmet or nearby Sirkeci. Choose lower Karaköy for evenings out, or Kadıköy for its market and cafés if daily crossings suit your plans.

Choose your base on the map
The Golden Horn separates Sultanahmet and Sirkeci from Galata and Karaköy; both banks are in Europe. The Bosphorus separates that European side from Kadıköy in Asia. A room near the right tram stop or ferry pier often matters more than which continent it is on.

Kadıköy and ModaAsian-side markets and evenings, with crossings on monument days.1. Sultanahmet
Choose Sultanahmet for a short first visit with the major sights on foot. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, the Basilica Cistern and the Hippodrome form the cluster that makes this base so useful. You can return to your room between visits without crossing the city.
Rooftop breakfastHenna
Akbıyık Caddesi base with a shared terrace above Sultanahmet.View on BookingAt Henna, the terrace is shared; a bedroom view depends on category. Ask about steps for a duplex or access to the roof.
Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet occupies a former prison arranged around a courtyard. It is the heritage-luxury alternative here; distinguish it from the separate Four Seasons on the Bosphorus.
Sultanahmet is postcard Istanbul, but it is not one uniform hotel zone. The lanes around Arasta and Akbıyık feel different from the busy Divanyolu tram corridor. Lower addresses toward the seafront can add an uphill walk to the monuments; an attractive map distance does not show the gradient or the last stretch of cobbles.
You can eat here in the evening. What you give up is the concentration of bars and late-night choices found across the Golden Horn. For a light sleeper, the useful questions are whether the room faces a restaurant terrace or street, how the windows are glazed and where the hotel places the room—not whether the whole district is supposedly quiet.
2. Sirkeci and Eminönü
Choose Sirkeci for the historic peninsula with more transport options close by. The T1 tram, Sirkeci’s Marmaray station and the Eminönü ferries make it a practical base when your days extend beyond the monuments. Compare its connecting family rooms or simpler hotels when you want that flexibility without leaving the old-city side.
Family-room interiorSirkeci Mansion
Book the Connected Family Room for separate spaces and two bathrooms.View on Booking
Standard double roomErboy
A simpler Sirkeci option with doubles, triples and family categories.View on BookingSirkeci Mansion’s Connected Family Room consists of two rooms joined by a door, with a queen bed, two singles and two bathrooms. That is a useful distinction from a triple or quadruple room with extra beds in one space. Book that named category if the separation matters. The hotel also has an indoor pool.1
Erboy offers doubles, twins, triples and family categories. Compare the same occupancy and breakfast inclusion.
Around Sirkeci station, streets lead between hotels, food shops and the tram. Eminönü is the busier waterfront and market end, with the New Mosque and Egyptian Bazaar. These are neighbouring places, not interchangeable front doors: a room near Gülhane Park is different from one beside the ferry approaches.
The monuments are uphill from the waterfront. T1 can take some of that walking out of the day, although boarding a crowded tram with a pushchair or large suitcase still needs patience. Sirkeci is a strong compromise for families who want the old city without making every excursion a walk from Sultanahmet.
3. Beyoğlu, Galata and Karaköy
Choose this side of the Golden Horn for restaurants and evenings near your hotel. The important second choice is height: Karaköy sits by the water and T1 tram, Galata rises around the tower, and Pera/İstiklal is higher up. These are different arrivals with luggage.
City Classic Queen10 Karaköy
Kemeraltı Caddesi puts the tram and lower Karaköy close by.View on Booking
Deluxe Pera KingPera Palace
Historic interiors on the Pera side, above the Karaköy waterfront.View on BookingAt 10 Karaköy, Kemeraltı Caddesi, ask about traffic-facing rooms. The hotel lists one accessible Deluxe Signature Queen; reserve that specific room if its layout meets your needs.
Pera Palace’s Meşrutiyet Caddesi address is on the upper Pera side, rather than the Karaköy waterfront.
Walton Hotels Galata adds a rooftop restaurant/bar near the tower to the comparison. Price its room categories alongside the larger hotels, and allow for Galata’s sloping streets on the way from the waterfront.
Galata’s appeal is in its stone tower, design shops and streets such as Serdar-ı Ekrem. Karaköy trades that uphill setting for cafés, galleries and the water. İstiklal supplies the long pedestrian walk toward Taksim, with late activity on and around the avenue. A side street can still have a bar underneath: use the room’s orientation and recent room-specific feedback to judge noise.
For the monuments, use T1 from Karaköy toward the historic peninsula. From the top of the hill, the F2 Tünel connects Beyoğlu with Karaköy; from Taksim, F1 descends to Kabataş for T1. Choose the Taksim end if its airport coach and M2 connection fit repeated journeys; choose lower Karaköy if the tram, waterfront cafés and fewer hills matter more. Include the walk and any change when comparing the routes.
4. Beşiktaş and Ortaköy
Choose this stretch for a stay centred on the Bosphorus. Waterfront palace hotels, the Beşiktaş market streets and Ortaköy’s mosque-side square offer different versions of it. Choose the address first: Beşiktaş and Ortaköy are separate bases along the shore, not one compact neighbourhood around a tram stop.

Shared dining terraceStay Bosphorus
A smaller Ortaköy hotel with terrace dining overlooking the Bosphorus.View on BookingAt Çırağan Palace, the infinity pool is shared; book a named Bosphorus-view bedroom if that outlook is essential.
The Stay Bosphorus is the smaller Ortaköy option. A view or balcony must belong to the room category you select.
Beşiktaş has market streets, cafés and busy evenings inland from the waterfront hotels. Ortaköy is farther along the coastal road, near the bridge and mosque. Neither is a walk-out base for Hagia Sophia and Topkapı. Kabataş is the useful T1 terminus, but first you must reach it from your hotel; that extra walk, bus or taxi leg is the part a simple “tram to Sultanahmet” estimate leaves out.
Ortaköy has no direct metro or tram stop. Check road conditions and the actual ferry timetable for your day rather than treating a nearby pier as an all-day link to every destination. The scheduled Kadıköy–Beşiktaş ferry is useful for an evening on the Asian side.

5. Nişantaşı
Choose Nişantaşı when shopping, restaurants and an upscale hotel matter more than walking to the old-city sights. The useful landmarks here are Abdi İpekçi Caddesi, Teşvikiye and the Maçka side of the neighbourhood. It is a different daily routine from Sultanahmet.
Deluxe king roomPark Hyatt Maçka
Teşvikiye luxury with steam rooms and hammams in specified categories.View on BookingAt Park Hyatt Maçka Palas, private Turkish hammams belong to specified suites, including the Park Spa Suite. A standard room, Deluxe with steam room and suite with hammam are different products.1
The M2 at Osmanbey is useful, but hotels toward Maçka are not all immediately beside it. Check the walk from the actual building before choosing a rail-only airport arrival. For the historic peninsula, M2 connects with Marmaray at Yenikapı or with a walking transfer toward T1 at Vezneciler; the route you choose depends on which sight comes first.
Choose this for Nişantaşı’s shopping and hotel facilities; for a stay directly on the Bosphorus, compare the waterfront bases above.

6. Kadıköy and Moda
Choose Kadıköy for the market, restaurants and evenings on the Asian side. It works particularly well when you want to spend time here, rather than cross to Sultanahmet every morning. You can stay here on a first visit; the trade-off is repeated waiting, crossing and onward travel on monument days.
Shared rooftop poolDoubleTree Moda

Room interiorRiva's
Stay deeper in Moda, with separate sea-view and other room categories.View on BookingDoubleTree Moda’s rooftop pool is shared and seasonal; a sea-view bedroom is a separate category decision.
Riva’s Moda is farther from the central ferries, on Dr. Esat Işık Caddesi. Named sea-view categories do not make it a waterfront hotel. It lists a lift and one accessible room; confirm that room’s layout and availability.
Kadıköy’s Çarşı has fish stalls, food shops, restaurants and beer bars; Moda adds cafés and the waterfront promenade. Staying here leaves time for both after day-trippers head back.
For Hagia Sophia or Topkapı, a ferry to Eminönü leaves you on the historic peninsula, followed by a walk or tram. A ferry to Karaköy leaves you across the Golden Horn. The M4–Marmaray connection at Ayrılık Çeşmesi provides a rail alternative to Sirkeci. Include the hotel-to-station or hotel-to-pier walk in the decision.
The historic Moda pier in the photograph is not the central Kadıköy ferry terminal. Check the boarding pier and return sailing, particularly after dinner: on the published Şehir Hatları timetable, Eminönü departures finish earlier than Karaköy’s.

Arriving from IST or SAW
Compare the complete airport-to-hotel journey, including the final walk. SAW has a useful rail connection to the historic peninsula; IST can work for an Asian-side stay. Neither airport becomes the best choice simply because it shares your hotel’s shore.
Airport routes, transfers and the last stretch
| Your base | From Istanbul Airport (IST) | From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) |
|---|---|---|
| Sultanahmet / Sirkeci | M11 to Gayrettepe, M2 to Yenikapı, then Marmaray to Sirkeci; finish on foot or with T1 as appropriate. A different M2 connection via Vezneciler involves a street walk to T1 at Laleli–Üniversite. Compare Havaist’s Sultanahmet/Sirkeci stops with your actual address. | Take M4 to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, change to Marmaray for Sirkeci, then finish on foot or by T1 tram according to the hotel’s address. |
| Karaköy / Galata / Pera | M11 to Gayrettepe, then M2 to Şişhane; choose the exit and final descent carefully. For lower Karaköy, compare the F2 Tünel connection with a direct final road transfer. | M4 and Marmaray to Yenikapı, then M2 to Şişhane; alternatively use M4 to Kadıköy and a ferry to Karaköy while the relevant sailing operates. |
| Beşiktaş / Ortaköy | Compare the current Havaist stop list with M11–M2 to Taksim, F1 to Kabataş, then the final coastal leg. The rail route has several changes. | Havabus to Taksim, followed by the final road leg, is one option. Rail through Marmaray/M2 or M4 to Kadıköy plus the Beşiktaş ferry can work, but assess luggage and sailing times before choosing it. |
| Nişantaşı | M11 to Gayrettepe, M2 to Osmanbey, then the hotel-specific walk or taxi. | Havabus to Taksim plus a final transfer; or M4–Marmaray to Yenikapı, then M2 to Osmanbey. |
| Kadıköy / Moda | M11–M2 to Yenikapı, Marmaray to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, then M4 toward Kadıköy or a final local transfer. Compare the current airport-coach alternative before accepting all these changes. | M4 directly to Kadıköy, or Havabus to Kadıköy Rıhtım, followed by the walk or local ride into Moda. |
Havaist’s published Sultanahmet route names Çatladıkapı, Sirkeci and Şişhane 6. Çatladıkapı is down by the seafront; “Sultanahmet” on a coach timetable does not mean a drop-off outside Hagia Sophia. Its operator notice of 17 May 2026 quotes TRY 470 per passenger; use the live booking screen to confirm the departure and fare.
Havabus’s published SAW–Kadıköy fare is TRY 300 per passenger. Its roughly 60-minute estimate is subject to road traffic and excludes your last stretch to the hotel. The listed Kadıköy stop is Rıhtım İETT bus stops. The operator also serves Taksim; Nişantaşı and Ortaköy require a further transfer.
The M11 now continues through the airport to Halkalı, where it connects with Marmaray. Compare that option for Sirkeci or Kadıköy when fewer changes matter; it is not necessarily the quickest route. The Ministry’s September update lists endpoint departures of 06:00–23:45 from Halkalı and 05:55–23:55 from Gayrettepe, every 15 minutes. These are not airport-station departure times.
Metro Istanbul lists normal M2 and M4 operating hours as 06:00–00:00. Selected weekend night services are a separate timetable. Check the first or last departure for your direction, plus M11, Marmaray and any ferry connection; a midnight arrival does not establish that the whole route is still available.
With heavy luggage, limited mobility or children arriving tired, fewer transfers can justify a pre-arranged road transfer even when rail reaches the right district. Confirm the final drop-off and any pedestrian-only approach with the hotel. No single taxi price or citywide journey time fits all six bases.
Istanbulkart and ferries
Use a stored-value Istanbulkart for ordinary city transport, and budget for separate journeys. The card purchase and the balance you load onto it are separate costs. Airport coaches, Marmaray, M11 and sightseeing cruises should not be priced as ordinary tram rides.
Current fares, visitor conditions and evening ferries
| Item | Published price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Istanbulkart | TRY 165 per card | Card issue charge; add travel credit separately. |
| Standard city metro / T1 tram | TRY 46.20 per full-fare boarding | Anonymous-card city tariff; not a through-ticket for all subsequent transfers. |
| Kadıköy–Karaköy / Eminönü or Kadıköy–Beşiktaş ferry | TRY 65.21 per adult full-fare crossing | Regular Şehir Hatları service using Istanbulkart; special night service can have a different tariff. |
| Şehir Hatları short Bosphorus tour | TRY 340 per foreign adult passenger | The separate sightseeing tour, not a commuter crossing. |
| Şehir Hatları long Bosphorus tour | TRY 640 per foreign adult passenger, return | The operator’s long return tour; do not substitute the lower domestic fare. |
For an ordinary foreign visitor, the anonymous full-fare card is the straightforward category. Do not plan your budget around Turkish-citizen personalisation benefits or assume a shared card earns transfer discounts for everyone. A separate card for each traveller makes independent journeys simpler.
Marmaray and M11 have their own distance bands and can debit the maximum fare on entry. Keep enough balance for that debit. Distance refunds are among the benefits subject to Istanbulkart personalisation rules, so an ordinary foreign visitor using an anonymous card should not budget on receiving an exit refund. These lines are excluded from the ordinary transfer-discount calculation. Add up the current fares for each leg when comparing the airport routes above.3
For evenings, choose the pier as well as the destination. The published Kadıköy–Karaköy–Eminönü schedule shows the last Eminönü departure at 21:05, while the Karaköy and Kadıköy columns continue to 01:00. The Kadıköy–Beşiktaş page lists 23:15 from Kadıköy and 23:45 from Beşiktaş, with a note naming Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Pier. Check the current day’s service notices: some departures have weekend or public-holiday exceptions, and later sailings do not mean every pier is served all night.3
The normal ferry can be a lovely part of the day. It takes you between useful neighbourhoods; a Bosphorus tour takes a sightseeing route with its own ticket and timetable. Choose the service for the journey you want, rather than treating one as a cheaper version of the other.
Budget for the room and the sights separately
Accommodation and museum tickets are different decisions. Two foreign adults buying Hagia Sophia’s visitor tickets and the Topkapı combined ticket should allow €50 plus TRY 5,500, before other attractions.4
Museum tickets, passes and the hotel tax
| Visit / product | Published foreign-adult price | Scope that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hagia Sophia visitor route | €25 per person | The mosque’s gallery visitor route, distinct from worship access and from the separate History and Experience Museum. The ministry’s fee announcement dates from January 2024. |
| Topkapı combined ticket | TRY 2,750 per person | Palace + Harem + Hagia Irene; valid for one day. Topkapı is normally closed on Tuesdays. |
| Galata Tower | €30 per person | Published standard foreign-visitor admission; night products and pass rules must be checked separately. |
| Dolmabahçe: Selamlık + Harem + Painting Museum | TRY 2,000 per person | This named product; broader palace passes cost more. Normally closed on Mondays. |
| MuseumPass Istanbul | €105 per person | Five days from first museum use, for participating museums; not a universal attraction pass. |
The MuseumPass currently lists Topkapı Palace, its Harem and Hagia Irene among participating sites, and includes Galata Tower with entry no later than 18:14. It is not valid for the night-museum programme after 19:00.4 Do not confuse it with MüzeKart, which has different eligibility and exceptions. Price your actual itinerary against the current covered-site list before buying.
The Basilica Cistern is a separate budget item. Compare its daytime entry with the separate evening programme on the operator’s ticket page; do not assume MuseumPass covers it. The Blue Mosque does not require a sightseeing ticket, but visitor access must fit around worship.
Children’s and student concessions vary by operator. National Palaces lists free entry for domestic and foreign children aged 0–6, while foreign-student discounts have their own documentation and pricing conditions. Do not apply one site’s age limit to the entire itinerary.
For hotels, the accommodation tax is 1% through 31 December 2026 under the current decree. It is a percentage of the taxable accommodation service, excluding VAT, rather than a fixed charge per person per night. Ordinary hotel overnight accommodation is generally subject to 10% VAT separately. The hotel accounts for the accommodation tax, but that does not establish whether a particular booking quote already includes it.5
Compare the final total for the room and stay, including the stated taxes, meal plan and cancellation terms. Read whether any amount is payable at the property. For stays after the temporary tax period, check the law and the booking breakdown again. Keep TRY charges in lira when budgeting; any euro or dollar equivalent depends on the exchange rate used when you pay.
Questions that change the choice
Where would you stay for just two full sightseeing days?
Sultanahmet for the shortest repeated walks to the main monuments; Sirkeci if airport rail, the tram and ferries are equally important. You can spend an evening in Galata or Kadıköy without moving your hotel across the water.
Is Galata or Karaköy easier with a suitcase?
Lower Karaköy can spare you the climb from the waterfront. For a Galata or Pera hotel, work out whether arriving from Şişhane or using the Tünel reduces the hill you need to tackle. Confirm the final street and entrance; neither name guarantees a step-free journey.
Is Kadıköy a poor choice for a first visit?
No. It makes sense if food, cafés and evenings on the Asian side are part of the trip. It is less efficient if every full day begins and ends around the same Sultanahmet monuments. Compare the repeated door-to-door journey, not just the time spent on the boat.
Where should a family start looking?
Sirkeci is a useful starting point, and a named connecting-room configuration can be more valuable than a higher hotel category. Check beds, bathrooms and occupancy for the children’s ages. For a lower-cost comparison, include Erboy’s family categories; for an Asian-side stay, weigh the DoubleTree’s location against your planned crossings.
Should I avoid an entire neighbourhood because it might be noisy?
Choose the street and room instead. Around İstiklal, the Kadıköy bar streets or a busy tram corridor, ask what is directly below the bedroom and which way it faces. A quiet-looking hotel façade, a side-street address or an area-wide reputation cannot establish the experience inside that room.
