Where to Stay in Athens for the Acropolis, City Life and Ferries
For a first Athens stay, choose Plaka for old streets below the Acropolis or Syntagma for easy airport arrivals. Koukaki suits museum days; Monastiraki suits late nights. Before an island departure, choose your port first.

Choose your Athens base
Choose a central base for the days you want to spend on foot, then match the final night to your sailing. Plaka’s old lanes, Monastiraki’s rooftops and Koukaki’s museum-side promenade offer three different ways to return after sightseeing.

Airport arrival or island departure?
For a straightforward airport arrival, Syntagma is the easiest starting point: M3 arrives directly, and X95 gives you an alternative throughout the night. Monastiraki also has a direct airport metro. For Koukaki, change at Syntagma to M2 for Akropoli or Syngrou-Fix.
- Confirm the port Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio are different journeys. Check the port named on your ticket.
- Find your boarding point Even for the same island, Piraeus gates vary by ship. Include the station-to-gate transfer with luggage.
- Choose your final night Compare your central hotel’s full transfer with a port-side night for early departures. Work back from the boarding deadline.
Mykonos can be served from Piraeus or Rafina. An airport hotel is useful only if its onward transfer fits the actual sailing.1
From Athens Airport (ATH)
| Route | Full adult fare | What matters for your hotel |
|---|---|---|
| M3 airport metro | €9 single; €16 return | Direct to Syntagma and Monastiraki; it also serves Piraeus and continues to Dimotiko Theatro. The return ticket lasts 30 days. |
| X95 airport express bus | €5.50 each way | Airport–Syntagma, 24 hours. OASA estimates about 60 minutes; allow for traffic and the walk to your hotel. |
| X96 airport express bus | €5.50 each way | Airport–Piraeus, 24 hours. OASA estimates about 90 minutes, depending on traffic. Your ferry gate may need a further transfer. |
| Yellow taxi to the central inner ring | €40 / €55 per taxi | €40 for arrival at the destination from 05:00 to midnight; €55 from midnight to 05:00. The published fixed fare includes applicable extras. Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio are outside this fare zone. |
Airport metro trains run less frequently than ordinary city trains. STASY’s published airport departures are 06:10–23:34, normally every 36 minutes; Syntagma is about 40 minutes away on the train. The airport section does not take part in Saturday’s overnight city metro service. Check service notices if your flight arrives near the last train.2
The Suburban Railway is another direct airport–Piraeus option. Compare its departure with M3 rather than automatically taking the next train: both the station reached and the onward walk matter. Piraeus station and Dimotiko Theatro are separate stops; the latter is M3’s terminus in the port city. An airport express ticket covers one airport journey, not ordinary urban hopping on and off.
The €9 airport metro ticket also permits urban transfers for 90 minutes from first validation; it does not cover airport express buses or X80.
Urban tickets and Tap2Ride
The urban ticket is €1.20 for 90 minutes; a 24-hour ticket is €4.10 and a 5-day ticket is €8.20. These exclude the airport metro section and airport express buses. The 90-minute and 5-day products also exclude X80; the 24-hour ticket includes it when the service operates.
The €20 tourist ticket lasts 72 hours from first validation and includes urban travel plus one journey from and one journey to the airport, by metro or an airport express bus. It also covers X80. Check that your airport return falls within those 72 hours: three hotel nights can exceed the ticket’s validity.2 Compare it with the €16 metro return and the city journeys you will actually make.
Tap2Ride accepts Visa or Mastercard, including the card in a phone or watch wallet, on OASA metro, trams, buses and trolleybuses. Urban trips are capped at €4.10 per day; airport metro and express-bus charges are separate. It does not automatically buy the €16 return or the €20 tourist ticket. Each traveller needs their own card or device. Use the same physical card or the same wallet device throughout; tap in and out of the metro, and on boarding a bus or tram. A physical card and its phone version are different payment credentials. Do not assume this OASA facility also works on the Suburban Railway or KTEL coaches.
Reduced airport singles are €4.50 by metro and €2.70 by express bus for eligible passengers. Children under six travel free; OASA lists reduced fares for ages 7–18 and people over 65, among other eligible groups. For a child who is exactly six, confirm the applicable fare at an OASA ticket office. Discounted products require the appropriate personalised ATH.ENA Card and eligibility documents. Tap2Ride charges full fares, so confirm the concession at a ticket office rather than tapping a bank card and expecting a discount.2
Which ferry port?
| Port | Examples of services | Where an overnight stay helps |
|---|---|---|
| Piraeus | Many Cyclades, Crete and Saronic sailings | A port hotel can simplify an early departure. For a later sailing, a central base near M1/M3 may suit the rest of your trip better. |
| Rafina | Andros, Tinos and Mykonos, depending on operator and season | Consider Rafina itself for an early sailing. From ATH there is a separate KTEL coach; from Athens the Rafina coach starts at Nomismatokopio, on M3. |
| Lavrio | Kea and Kythnos, among other services | A local night or a pre-arranged road transfer can help with an early departure. KTEL’s Lavrio/Markopoulo route is linked to Nomismatokopio; airport connections use Markopoulo. Check the actual connection. |
For Rafina and Lavrio, consult KTEL Attikis’ current route timetable, not an old city guide’s bus stop or hourly estimate. The Sounio coastal bus from Pedion Areos is a different route from the Lavrio/Markopoulo service. These coaches have separate tickets from OASA.1
For planning, STASY’s ordinary timetable lists first Piraeus-bound departures at 05:16 from Monastiraki on M1 and 05:32 from Syntagma on M3. Those are station departures, not a promise that a particular 07:00 ferry is reachable. Check your travel day’s service and work backwards from boarding. If that leaves a thin margin, arrange a taxi or stay in Piraeus.1
1. Plaka and Anafiotika
Choose Plaka when you want your first Athens stay to begin in the old streets below the Acropolis. It suits a short visit built around sightseeing on foot, with tavernas and small squares between the monuments.
Rooftop poolElectra Palace
Full-service Plaka base with a seasonal rooftop pool above the lanes.View on Booking
Suite loungeAVA Hotel & Suites
Executive Suite with kitchenette and living room; sleeps up to four.View on BookingMuch of the appeal survives away from the headline sights: neoclassical balconies, cafés around the Monument of Lysicrates, and lanes that tighten as you climb towards Anafiotika’s whitewashed houses. Adrianou and the surrounding restaurant streets can stay lively after dinner. For an early night, the side and floor of the room matter more than the word “Plaka”.
Separate lower Plaka from Anafiotika’s hillside lanes when checking the address. The latter have steps and narrow passages; a hotel elsewhere in Plaka does not automatically require that climb. With luggage or a pushchair, ask where a taxi can stop and how the final approach reaches reception. Do not assume every old-town address is either fully pedestrian or level.
At AVA, the 52 m² Executive Suite accommodates up to four, with a separate bedroom, living room and kitchenette; guests three and four use a sofa bed and/or extra bed. The two-person AVA Loft Studio has no kitchenette. Electra Palace’s indoor pool has a different rule from its seasonal outdoor pool: children under 17 may use it only until 14:00, and access is by appointment.

- Adrian Hotel : Rooftop breakfast in warm weather, on Adrianou in Plaka.
- Plaka Hotel : A connecting Family Room for four, with a shared rooftop bar.
2. Monastiraki and Psiri
Choose this base for rooftop evenings, markets and a direct airport metro in the same neighbourhood.
Acropolis-view roomA for Athens
Square-side rooms and rooftop drinks; Acropolis views need the right category.View on Booking
Double / Twin with balconyAttalos
Stay on lively Athinas Street and use the shared rooftop.View on BookingMonastiraki Square gives you the layered Athens scene: the church, the mosque, market streets and the Acropolis above. Across the road, Psiri’s old workshops share the lanes with bars, restaurants and street art. It is a good area if being able to walk home after dinner is part of the holiday.
That evening life is also the room-selection question. Miaouli, the square-facing frontage and Psiri’s bar streets are different propositions from a sheltered room. Check recent comments for the actual category and ask about its position relative to music venues and rooftop activity. A higher floor can be nearer a rooftop bar, so “high floor” is not a universal answer to noise.
A for Athens’ Deluxe Double Room with Acropolis View is a 25 m² category for two, distinct from ordinary doubles. Attalos’ shared rooftop does not establish a bedroom view.

- Perianth : Compare the Penthouse Suite for its 360-degree panorama; other rooms differ.
- Mona Athens : A small factory-conversion hotel for a stay centred on design.
3. Syntagma
Choose Syntagma when arrival, onward travel and easy connections should take little organising. The direct airport metro and all-night X95 are its clearest advantages, with the National Garden nearby for a break.
Connecting roomAmalia Athens
Separate bathrooms and connecting bedrooms make the family layout worth comparing.View on Booking
Outdoor poolGrande Bretagne
Grand surroundings on Syntagma Square; indoor spa facilities are under renovation.View on BookingSyntagma is a busy city centre, with Parliament above the square and shopping streets leading towards Monastiraki. It is a practical place to begin walks into Plaka without committing to a narrow old-town approach with luggage. Amalias, Filellinon and Stadiou carry traffic: ask about the room frontage if a quiet night matters.
Amalia’s Interconnecting Room Type links a double room with a twin room, with separate bathrooms. Request that configuration for your party; two unrelated room reservations do not guarantee a connecting door. Its double glazing is useful, but it does not make the avenue disappear.
If you are choosing Grande Bretagne for its facilities, check the current details: the outdoor pool is for residents, normally April to approximately late October, weather permitting. At this update, Marriott lists the spa, fitness studio and indoor spa pool as temporarily closed for renovation, with some treatments relocated. It remains a luxury address, but an indoor swim should not be the assumption behind your booking.

- King George : Another grand-hotel option directly on Syntagma Square.
- Ergon House : A food-focused stay built around the marketplace on Mitropoleos.
4. Koukaki and Makrigianni
Choose the south side of the Acropolis for museum days, the archaeological promenade and streets that feel more residential as you move into Koukaki.
Rooftop diningHerodion
Museum-side base with rooftop dining; its six-person apartment has stairs.View on Booking
Kitchenette suiteNLH FIX
Kitchenette suites for four; City Living rooms face busy Syngrou.View on BookingMakrigianni is the museum-side end of this combined area; Koukaki extends farther south. Dionysiou Areopagitou is the pedestrian promenade to aim for when choosing pleasant daily walks. Syngrou Avenue is the busy road edge, while pedestrian Drakou has a lively bar scene. There are calmer streets between them, but “Koukaki” alone is not a promise of silence or a fixed saving over Plaka.
NLH FIX’s City Living Suite Apartment, with a kitchenette and sofa bed, is advertised for up to four adults or two adults and two children. It faces Syngrou. Its Acropolis Panorama Loft is a different, two-person category with a private terrace: do not book a family suite expecting the loft’s view.
Herodion’s room views also vary by category. Its Point A rooftop restaurant is seasonal, May–October; the roof’s hydromassage tubs are not a swimming pool. If you are considering its Family Apartment for up to six, note the separate apartment building, second floor with no lift, and check-in at the hotel. Its sleeping layout is two double bedrooms and a twin sleeping room. Bellboy assistance with bags does not remove the stairs.

4 more stays
- AthensWas : Design on Dionysiou Areopagitou; Acropolis-view suites are specific categories.
- Athens Gate : Rooftop dining opposite the Temple of Olympian Zeus, on Syngrou.
- Philippos : A Family Room for four near the museum; penthouse views are separate.
- COCO-MAT Athens BC : Museum-side rooms with named view categories; a separate COCO-MAT property.
5. Kolonaki
Choose Kolonaki for cafés, galleries and a more polished neighbourhood setting, provided an uphill walk suits you.
Urban SuiteCOCO-MAT Hotel Athens

Rooftop poolSt George Lycabettus
Uphill city panoramas with a summer pool; book named view categories.View on BookingThe shopping streets around Skoufa and Tsakalof give the area its everyday rhythm. Higher up, the lanes and steps towards Lycabettus change the feel of the walk home. Check the approach from Evangelismos or Syntagma for the hotel you choose: being close on a map can still mean climbing with bags.
The Lycabettus funicular is an outing to the hilltop; it does not solve the everyday walk from the metro to a hotel. With limited mobility, confirm the hotel entrance, lift and room route separately from the neighbourhood’s distance to the centre.
At COCO-MAT Hotel Athens, the 20 m² Sleep Tight Room has an internal view; the pictured 40 m² Urban Suite also accommodates two. This is the Kolonaki property on Patriarchou Ioakeim, not COCO-MAT Athens BC beside the Acropolis Museum.
At St George, choose Acropolis View if that outlook is essential. The Vertigo pool operates in summer, weather permitting; confirm guest access and current hours.

- Monsieur Didot : Six-room neoclassical residence on Sina, with breakfast served in your room.
- Oniro City : A boutique option on Omirou; check the selected suite’s sleeping layout.
6. Omonia and Karaiskaki
Consider these addresses when the room and transport connection offer better value for your particular stay. Moxy Athens City is at 65 Stadiou, at the Omonia end of the street; ZEUS Wyndham Grand Athens is at Karaiskaki Square, by Metaxourgeio. They are two different metro bases, grouped here for comparison.

Karaiskaki hotel with named view rooms and a seasonal rooftop pool.View on BookingOmonia has M1 and M2; Metaxourgeio has M2. Neither gives you the same direct airport journey as Syntagma or Monastiraki. Compare the whole route and the price for your dates before treating this part of town as an automatic bargain or the ideal base for every early departure.
This is a dense working-city setting, with major roads, shops and side streets whose evening activity varies. Stadiou at Omonia and Megalou Alexandrou at Karaiskaki are more useful address descriptions than “historic centre”. Look at the last walk from the relevant metro station and recent comments about that block; arrange a door-to-door arrival if you would rather not work it out with luggage after dark.
At ZEUS Wyndham Grand, the Executive Double/Twin Acropolis View is a named category. The rooftop pool is normally open mid-April to mid-October; an attractive pool photograph is not proof it will operate during a winter stay.

- Brown Acropol : Design rooms and rooftop dining; the rooftop tubs are not a pool.
- Meliá Athens : Compare its central location and rooftop facilities, with seasonal operation.
7. Piraeus
Choose Piraeus when your actual ferry leaves from Piraeus and a local overnight stay makes boarding easier. Match the hotel to your sailing’s gate and transfer, rather than a generic “near the port” label.
Guest roomPhidias Piraeus
A local port-night base with an arranged shuttle to your departure.View on Booking
Family SuitePiraeus City
Family suites with bunks; compare the four- and five-person categories.View on BookingThe port city has more than its boarding lanes. The marinas around Zea/Pasalimani and Mikrolimano offer a pleasant setting for dinner, which makes a tactical overnight stay less of a compromise. For an Acropolis-focused city break, however, staying centrally saves the repeated journey back into Athens.
Phidias’ free 24-hour transfer is local to Piraeus: ferry gates, rail/metro station and the X96 bus stop. Arrange collection, sailing, group and bags with the hotel; it is not a fixed-departure bus or a boarding guarantee. The X96-stop transfer does not go to ATH airport.5
At Piraeus City, Family Suite and Family Suite with Balcony have different capacity and layout descriptions. The latter is advertised for up to four, with a double bed and bunk beds in separate sleeping areas; the 35 m² Family Suite is advertised for up to five. Select the actual category for your party. An Executive Double with Port View is a different room choice, and a port skyline view does not identify your ferry gate.

Piraeus Theoxenia : Full-service port-city stay; its pool is unavailable during the 2026 renovation.6
Exarchia as a neighbourhood outing
Exarchia is worth a detour for bookshops, record stores, cafés and the streets around Kallidromiou, especially if you are visiting the National Archaeological Museum. It offers a different slice of Athens from the Acropolis circuit. Walk here for that atmosphere rather than expecting another Plaka.
You can explore it from any of the central bases above. The city’s official guide notes that protests and confrontations can occur; give any gathering space and change your route if needed.
The accommodation charge to add to your budget
Greece’s climate-resilience fee is charged in euros per room or apartment per daily use—normally per night for an overnight stay, not per guest. The registered accommodation category determines the amount.
| Registered hotel category | 1 April–31 October | 1 November–31 March |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 stars | €2 | €0.50 |
| 3 stars | €5 | €1.50 |
| 4 stars | €10 | €3 |
| 5 stars | €15 | €4 |
Apartment categories and collection rules
The legally separate category of rented furnished rooms/apartments pays €2/€0.50. A standard short-term rental pays €8/€2; a detached short-term-rental house over 80 m² pays €15/€4. For licensed furnished tourist residences, the rates are €8/€2 below 80 m² and €15/€4 at 80 m² or above; licensed furnished tourist villas pay €15/€4. In each pair, the first figure is for April–October and the second for November–March. Ask how the property is registered rather than judging by its marketing name.
The accommodation collects the fee separately and issues a receipt. If your stay crosses a seasonal boundary, the appropriate amounts apply to each period, with separate monthly receipts where required.8
What changes with the season?
In hot weather, effective air conditioning, shade on the walk home and a room you can return to for a break make sightseeing easier. The hotel notes above distinguish seasonal pools and children’s access.
In cooler months, heating, daylight and operating indoor facilities become more important. Check any named renovation notice before choosing a hotel for a particular amenity.
Questions that help you choose
Is Plaka or Syntagma better for a first visit?
Choose Plaka if stepping into the old lanes is part of the trip you want. Choose Syntagma if direct arrival, the night airport bus and onward connections matter more. Both work for central sightseeing; compare the last walk to the specific hotel, not just the area name.
Where should a family start looking?
Start with lower Plaka, the museum side of Makrigianni or Syntagma beside the National Garden. Then check the number of proper sleeping spaces, the children’s ages allowed in the booking, any kitchen facilities and the route to the room. “Suite” may still mean two guests. A connecting-room category, a sofa-bed suite and an apartment on the second floor without a lift solve different problems.
How do I make sure the Acropolis is visible from my room?
Book the exact category that promises it. A rooftop restaurant, a shared terrace and a bedroom view are separate features. Check that the photographs belong to your category and ask whether the view is from the bed, a window or a balcony. Neighbourhood geometry alone does not guarantee a sightline.
Which base is easiest if I want fewer hills and steps?
Begin with the streets around Syntagma or the Acropolis Museum, then check your exact hotel approach. Anafiotika and upper Kolonaki introduce more climbing. Ask about steps before reception, lift access to the booked room and any separate building; a hotel advertising a lift does not by itself confirm every part of your stay is step-free.
Do I need to change hotels before a ferry?
Only if it improves the actual departure. A comfortable margin to a Piraeus sailing may let you keep a central hotel. An early boarding deadline, a distant gate or a Rafina/Lavrio departure can justify moving. Work backwards from the operator’s boarding instructions and include the final transfer to the ship.
Which Athens areas should I avoid booking blindly?
Any address sold only as “central” without a clear street and transport route. Around Omonia and Karaiskaki, compare the particular block; in Plaka check the approach with bags; in Psiri ask about nearby music; in Koukaki check Syngrou and bar-street exposure. A good room choice needs those details, not a citywide safety promise.
Before you book
Choose the room for the Athens days you want, then use the departure checks above to settle the final night.
